What is it? |
| |
The ALSO® (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) Provider Course is an educational program designed to assist healthcare professionals in developing and maintaining the knowledge and procedural skills needed to manage emergencies that can arise in obstetrical care.
Originally conceived in 1991 by the University of Wisconsin, ALSO is now owned and managed by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). In 1997, The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) became the exclusive licensed distributor of the ALSO Provider Course throughout Canada. In 2003 The UAE ALSO was inaugurated at the faculty of medicine and Health Sciences.
The UAE ALSO Chapter believes that UAE women and their families will benefit from the standardized, collegial and multidisciplinary approach to maternity care that the ALSO Provider Course engenders.

The ALSO Provider Course is geared to all maternity care providers including family physicians, obstetricians, midwives, nurses, paramedics and trainees.

Program Overview:
The Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®) Provider Course is an evidence-based, interprofessional training program developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
The program is designed to enhance the knowledge, clinical skills, and team performance of healthcare professionals managing obstetric emergencies through a standardized, simulation-driven approach.

Certification & CME
Participants who successfully complete all ALSO® course requirements will receive:

Official ALSO® Provider Certificate (International) issued through the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) system

National CME Accreditation: 8 CME Hours (subject to local authority approval)

ALSO® Instructor Course
Overview:
The ALSO® Instructor Course is designed to prepare qualified ALSO® Providers to become effective faculty members in the ALSO® Provider Course.

Eligible candidates include:

Physicians (including ≥ PGY-2 residents)
-
Registered Nurses
-
Certified Midwives
Pathway to Approved ALSO® Instructor
Achieving full Approved Instructor status is a three-step process:
-
1. Successful completion of the ALSO® Provider Course
-
2. Successful completion of the ALSO® Instructor Course
-
3. Successful completion of teaching requirements within one (1) year
After the Instructor Course, the candidate must be evaluated by an advisory faculty member during two monitored ALSO® Provider Courses. Upon successful evaluation, the candidate will be recommended for Approved Instructor status, after which the official instructor recognition will be issued.
